Story

Back around 1996 or so. I was playing music in AZ with a Country Band called Loose Change. Yes.....Penny & The Loose Change Band.   The lead guitar player, Darin, and I had been friends for about 15 years, and we had played music together for about 7 of them.  Needles to say, we are pretty good friends and I know his character.

This is the story...  Darin was telling me about a recurring dream he had, where he was a Confederate Soldier running through the woods, with a rifle.  He jumped over a fence and came face to face with a Union Soldier.  Both Darin and the Union Soldier drew their rifles. They stood there aiming at each other. Both Soldiers must have realized at the same time, there was noone else around, so why kill each other. Without a word said, simultaneously they lowered their guns and Darin took off running again.

One night Darin went to a party.  He walked in the door and there was a guy sitting there that he didn't know. The guy looked at Darin and said "I know you from somewhere", Darin said "Yea, I know you from somewhere too".  This went on most of the night.  Towards the end of the night, the guy said "I know who you are! You were the Confederate Soldier!", Darin said "you were the Union Soldier!", and they told each other the same dream.

I was so struck by this story. I wanted to write a song about it, and I wanted to be the person running thru the woods.  I wrote a 3 page story and called it Dejavue.  I changed it to Carole Ann.  The story is a readers digest version of the inspiration of Darin's experience.

 Verse:
A cloud of smoke, ‘neath old growth tree’s
In a one room cabin, you’re in my dreams
A child with child, without a man
‘Cause he’s off fighting, for the Southern land
Chorus          Carol Anne, What do you see
                        Running through the Backwoods
                        Of an endless dream
                        Carol Anne, Through your eyes
                        A memory of a man
                        From another time
Carol Anne, could it be, that you were me
 Verse:
I see you there, the past unfolds
I can feel you tremble, from the winters cold
Your heart aches, and mine does too
For the love of a man, that we both knew

Chorus          Carol Anne, What do you see
                        Running through the Backwoods
                        Of an endless dream
                        Carol Anne, through your eyes
                        A memory of a man
                        From another time
Carol Anne, could it be, that you were me
 Bridge
I can feel the passion, running through your veins
I can hear the blue coats coming through the rain
I can see a man reaching out for me
I watch him fall, and it brings me to my knees

Chorus          Carol Anne, What do you see
                        Running through the Backwoods
                        Of an endless dream
                        Carol Anne, through your eyes
                        A memory of a man
                        From another time
Carol Anne, could it be, that you were me

Story

I first moved to Nashville in 1998. I was frequenting a Writer's Showcase Night at the Broken Spoke. Mike (the co-writer of AZ Moon) was one of the many writers that spent their time at this showcase venue. Before we would go up to showcase our songs in "a Round", we would tune our guitars in the back room. I still remember Mike sitting on the floor, in this back room, telling me he had an idea for a song. He sung the first lines. It was about me, and he thought it must be how I was feeling, just moving to Nashville from Arizona. He asked if I'd like to write the rest of the song with him.

ARIZONA MOON

Michael Shipley & Penny Menze   (C)1998

Verse: The Arizona Moon Hanging in a western sky,as I pulled out on the interstate told that place good-bye. That desert dust was blowing Like the thoughts inside my mind. Thought I'd forget about you, when I left you behind.

Chorus: Arizona Moon, are you out tonight? I was feeling a little homesick and lonely for your light. As you paint a picture across the desert, like the one inside my mind, Arizona Moon…….Shine

Verse: The world is closing in on me, but I'm gonna be alright. Even though I don't have you To watch over me at night. Leaving was the only way I could start my new life. I may have moved on, but you're still on my mind

Chorus:  Arizona Moon, are you out tonight? I was feeling a little homesick and lonely for your light. As you paint a picture across the desert, like the one inside my mind. Arizona Moon…….Shine

Bridge: How I wish you could shine on me Down here in Tennessee

Chorus: Arizona Moon, are you out tonight? I was feeling a little homesick and lonely for your light. As you paint a picture across the desert, like the one inside my mind. Arizona Moon…….Shine

That Don't Stop Me From Loving You
Tony Lane David Lee Johnny Park
Verse
Well I've taken your picture from down off of the mantle
Had a last look at you in those Mexican sandals You bought, down in Cancun
Then I stuffed everything that you left in your wake
In an old cardboard box and I drove to the lake And tosed it, into the Blue
But that don't stop me, from loving you

Verse
Well I've thought long and hard 'bout the night that you left
And you had your reasons for going, I guess, After all That we’ve been through
Had good times and bad times and those in between And they say there’s just some things that weren’t meant to be And I know, that might be true But that don’t stop me, from loving you Bridge And I know in my soul That wherever I go, I’ll always be where you are And as long as I’m breathing This feeling I’m feeling will rattle around in my heart Verse So I thought you should know that I’ve taken a job Out on the west coast where I could get lost and find My way out of the blue And I met somebody outside of Salinas And we took some comfort in cheap margaritas And danced, under the moon But that don’t stop me, from loving you Ride Bridge When it’s all said and done And my days in the sun Are numbered and few That won’t stop me, from loving you

Lyrics

L.A. International Airport Leeanne Scott Verse: Standing in that silent hall, waiting for that final call Says he doesn’t love me anymore Shaking hands I pack a bag, trembling voice I call a cab Slowly I start walking to the door Cab arrives he blows his horn, I stumble out in the early morn Tell him of a place I’ve got to go Hit a hundred signal lights, Theatre belts and a traffic fight Getting thru these doors has been so slow Chorus: L.A. International Airport, where the big jet engines roar L.A. International Airport, I won’t see him anymore Verse: A stewardess in a mini skirt, hippy in a leather shirt Started on the way to Naples, Rome While I’m wondering where it’s at I see a Paris diplomat College kids are trying to get back home Baggage cart goes quickly by I see my case and I start to cry Stumble to the lounge to be alone While I’m trying to get some rest, I bite my lips and try my best To fight the pain that’s making me leave home Chorus: L.A. International Airport, where the big jet engines roar L.A. International Airport, I won’t see him anymore Verse: With silver wings across the sky Vapor trails that wave goodbye To those below who’ve got to stay at home Wish that I had flown at night So I could take that champagne flight Rid my myself of every tear I own Soaring high above the heavens in a 737 Fighting back the tears that curse my eyes Captains voice so loud and clear Amplifies into my ear, assuring me I’m flying friendly sky’s Chorus: L.A.
